This Thickener Red Mud certified reference material is produced from bauxite residue (red mud) generated at Rio Tinto’s Amrun alumina refinery in Queensland, Australia. The material represents residue from the Bayer Process, specifically the densified underflow from primary clarification.
Red mud is a highly alkaline, iron-rich by-product formed during digestion and extraction of alumina from bauxite. Its composition reflects the mineralogical transformation of gibbsite-, boehmite- and goethite-bearing ores during high-temperature caustic leaching, resulting in a complex blend of hematite, goethite, sodalite/cancrinite, titanium oxides and residual aluminosilicates.
This certified reference material has been characterised using various total analytical methodologies.
