This certified reference material is derived from bauxite residue (“red mud”)
generated by the Bayer Process, specifically from the densified underflow of
primary clarification. Red mud is a highly alkaline, iron-rich by-product formed
during the digestion of bauxite for alumina extraction. Its composition reflects
the transformation of gibbsite-, boehmite- and goethite-bearing ores during
high-temperature caustic leaching, producing a complex assemblage dominated by
hematite, goethite, sodalite/cancrinite, titanium oxides and residual
aluminosilicates.
This certified reference material has been characterised
using various total analytical methodologies.
