OREAS 912

OREAS 912 was prepared from a blend of volcanic-hosted massive sulphide (VMS) ore and barren rhyodacite. The VMS ore was sourced from the Ming Lode, located in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The Ming Lode is characterised by polymetallic sulphide assemblages containing copper, zinc, gold and silver, occurring as semi-massive to massive sulphide zones within volcanic host rocks. Sulphide mineralisation is dominated by pyrite and chalcopyrite hosted within a silica–sericite-altered rhyodacite matrix. The principal sulphide minerals, in approximate order of abundance, are pyrite, chalcopyrite, cubanite, sphalerite, pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite and galena.

Twenty-eight commercial analytical laboratories participated in the program to certify the elements reported below using the following methods:

  • Gold by fire assay (15-50g charge weight) with ICP-OES, ICP-MS or AAS finish
  • Gold by aqua regia digestion (10-50g sample weight) with ICP-OES, ICP-MS or AAS finish
  • Total Sulphur by infrared combustion furnace
  • Lithium borate or sodium peroxide fusion with full suite ICP-OES and ICP-MS elemental packages
  • Full ICP-OES and ICP-MS elemental suites by 4-acid (HNO3-HF-HClO4-HCl) digestion
  • Full ICP-OES and ICP-MS elemental suites by aqua regia digestion

To confirm homogeneity, gold by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) was undertaken on 20 x 85mg. This format enabled a nested ANOVA treatment of the INAA results to compare within- and between-unit variances, providing a statistical measure of batch homogeneity.
